'Nearly Famous' ditched, exec speaks out:

Where Skins succeeded, many others have failed. I got word today that Nearly Famous, E4's six-part teen drama set in a performing arts school, has been officially canned.

Alison Jackson, executive producer at production firm Kudos, said the team behind the show were disappointed for the show's fanbase.

How do you feel about Nearly Famous not being recommissioned?
"Naturally we were all very disappointed. Nearly Famous is a series we are extremely proud of and it developed a very loyal following of fans."

Had you started developing ideas for series two?
"We hadn’t committed to anything in particular but felt there was certainly the potential for the series to continue. The writer Holly Phillips, who conceived the series, is extremely talented and we would have thoroughly enjoyed developing new ideas for the drama with her."

How do you think the characters would have developed?
"As the students progressed through the College so their talents would have developed - and in the same way relationships would have changed too - almost certainly in some unexpected ways..."

I just like to clarify some stuff people keep mistaking me for someone who works for Channel 4, I don't this is not the official website, their was never one that I know of, this is a unofficial fansite run by fans of the show, I have not a clue if their will be a new series or anything about releasing the dvd so its pointless emailing me about as I don't have a clue , if their is any news regarding theses matters then we will posted them, but for official stuff it would be better off emailing Channel 4 directly.

How did you all like the last episode? Two weeks in now - is Nearly Famous ticking your boxes? Are we over the "this isn't quite as good as Skins" realisation yet?The good news is that this week's episode - Thursday, E4, 11pm - is the best yet. The pupils are set the challenge of creating an attractive, anonymous identity and trying to get a date with it (with mixed results: Joe in particular gets more than he bargained for), while the Owen-Kate-Lila love triangle sets down firm roots.

As we saw at the close of ep 2, Owen and Kate have got it on. And in ep 3, they get it on and on and on. But what does this mean for the chances of lovesick writer Lila?Let's ask the girl who plays her, Talulah Riley! "I think you're meant to think that they should be together and hope that they will be together," she says. "I don't know what's going to happen with Owen and Lila, but I think it would be nice if everything worked out well."Ridiculously optimistic. Maybe Aaron Johnson (Owen) can shed more light on the affair: "There's a love interest between one of the main characters and it sort of spreads out across the whole of the series. Eventually he finds out that he's in love with one of the characters and confesses his love, but it's too late in the end."I'm not an expert at reading between the lines, but could that mean that Owen keeps chasing Kate, only to eventually realise he wants to be with Lila but has missed his opportunity? Hmm, maybe this show does have more in common with Skins than we thought.

In this episode, Owen and Kate are openly together now, which leaves Joe feeling a little left out and Lila trying to hide her hurt. Ash introduces Lila to Bollywood. They dance and eventually kiss, just as Owen turns up with Lila's mum. While Kate questions the path she's chosen, Joe fights to save his group of friends. Joe's very concerned that the group's falling apart and is determined to put it right. He edits the footage he's filmed, cutting out the rows, leaving just the good times. Joe calls Kate, Owen and Lila together to show them what good friends they are but they just point out to Joe that his film's fake, it's not like this anymore and they sadly go their separate ways. Skins was too shallow and vain, but E4’s new teen drama seems more likeable and purposeful. Whether it’s any good is not yet clear. Holly Phillips’s sweet-natured series follows a group of performing art students “chasing the dream” as they make their way at the Salinger School. The central gang of four vying for our attention are the weird but innocent Lila (Talulah Riley); wayward emo kid Owen (Aaron Johnson); ambitious but self-doubting Kate (Anna Brewster); and geeky, shy Joe (Tunji Kasim). Tricksy photography and bold lighting mask the flimsiness of the plot and some of the acting, but the characters have charm. SH

NHolly’s teen dreams are on the screen

t's been billed as Fame meets the OC. The new E4 teen drama, Nearly Famous, which begins tomorrow, follows four performing arts students, who don't quite fit in, as they follow their dreams.

Lila is struggling to balance following her ambition of becoming a writer with her topsy-turvy home life, beautiful Kate is an actress who wants to step out of her famous father's shadow and troubled heart-throb Owen dreams of being a rock star - but he can't control his temper.

Sweet, geeky sound and lighting engineer Joe completes the quartet.

When it came to inspiration for the characters Holly Phillips, the Norfolk writer behind the series, didn't have to look too far - it's written straight from the heart.

"Lila is me at college, so that was quite scary to do, but I thought it was the right thing to do," she says, chatting excitedly about the series over coffee at Norwich's Playhouse bar. "I began with her and stole a part of my own life," she says.

Like Holly, Lila wants to be a TV writer and in the first episode cites two of Holly's personal heroes Aaron Sorkin, creator of hit shows the West Wing and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and Buffy the Vampire Slayer mastermind Joss Whedon among her influences.

"The other characters all come from friends," she continues. "I wanted my characters to all be misfits, who didn't naturally belong. Those four characters were my starting points and I wanted them to be the ones who weren't comfortable at the party - they would be the ones on the sideline, not knowing how to make conversation. You know, I don't think that feeling ever goes away - you just get better at hiding it. My boyfriend's studying psychology so I pick his brains about why people do what they do."

She pauses for a moment. "It's only just beginning to hit me that it's going to be out there."

The six-part series is made by Kudos, the company behind the acclaimed time travel cop-show Life on Mars and the first two episodes were directed by Sheree Folkson - one of the original directors of the global smash hit series Ugly Betty.

Holly, 31, who grew up in Flitcham and now lives in Walthamstow, says that Nearly Famous was influenced by classic American teen shows such as My So-Called Life, Dawson's Creek and the OC, with an essential added dash of British-ness.

"What I wanted to write about was teenagers who did really care about something, the kids who really want to do something with their lives.

"It's set in a performing arts college. Basically it's a Fame kind of idea, about people chasing their dreams - but it needed a touch of British cynicism too. There's an awareness they might not make it."

Because of its post-watershed timeslot, there's also a healthy dose of realism.

"You can show more of what teenagers really do - drink, swear and smoke. It's nice to be able to be truthful and not feel like you have to cover these things up," Holly says.

The first episode beautifully captures the awkwardness and excitement of the first few days of college. You're living away from home for the first time and finally becoming the person you want to be - but you don't know anyone and don't know where the parties are.

"I really wanted to do a teen show - I love that age group and the things that happen. Everything feels so big," Holly says.

Nearly Famous's cast of young rising stars is enviably talented. Talulah Riley, who plays Lila, starred in Pride and Prejudice opposite Keira Knightley; and Aaron Johnson, who plays Owen, was in the Edward Norton film the Illusionist. The "grown-up" cast includes East is East and EastEnders star Jimi Mistry, Ralph Brown, whose credits include the cult movie Withnail & I, and Gina Bellman from the sitcom Coupling.

Holly's seven-year-old daughter, Lily, also makes a brief cameo appearance in one episode later in the series.

The writer's big break came when she finished her cultural studies degree course at Norwich School of Art and Design nine years ago.

"I was always in love with writing, but it took me a while to work out what kind of writing," Holly says. "English was my best lesson and I would write short stories."

Then she saw the TV show that made her want to write for the small screen - Dennis Potter's Pennies From Heaven.

"From then I loved telly - I knew I wanted to write for telly," she says.

However, she initially started out writing for theatre.

"I was really lucky," she says. "For my final degree piece I wrote a play and around the time I graduated I saw an advert for a Royal Court Theatre play-writing competition. I sent the play off - and I was one of the winners. That started everything for me."

As a result of the competition, Holly won a place at the prestigious London theatre's young writers' group.

"It was really amazing and I learned so much. And theatre fed into telly - I learned about developing characters."

One of Holly's plays, Billy and the Crab Lady, was staged by the Soho Theatre Company - and was picked up by the legendary director Francis Ford Coppola who published it in his magazine, Zoetrope All Story.

"I never met him, but it's still cool to know that he read my script and liked it," she says.

Holly's TV writing credits include another teen drama, Sugar Rush, and she is working on a new project for Red Productions (the company behind Queer as Folk and Clocking Off) for the BBC.

She says she's grateful for the support that Jane Featherstone - joint managing director of Kudos, who encouraged her to write Nearly Famous - has given her.

"Jane Featherstone has mentored me. She's an amazing woman. If she likes a writer, she will push you, but she looks after you."

Although she's got other shows in the pipeline, Holly hopes that viewers will want to see more of Lila, Owen, Kate and Joe.

"I've got ideas for what I want to happen to the characters next - possibly take them up to graduation," she says.

Nearly Famous is on E4 on Thursday November 8 at 11pm.

Scots star Tunji is Nearly Famous

FAME costs...and new Scots star Tunji Kasim is paying for it by putting on an English accent for his first major role.

The young actor has bagged one of the lead parts in super cool E4 show Nearly Famous, about a group of young wannabe stars at performing arts school in London.

It is the kids from Fame for the 21st Century and Tunji, 21, who grew up in Nigeria before moving to Aberdeen when he was 12, can't believe his luck as he only graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow just days before he started filming.

He said: "To say I was lucky is an understatement. Someone's definitely on my side. It's my first job in front of cameras. It was tough because I had to do an English accent, which I was a bit scared about doing properly. But I think I pulled it off."

Nearly Famous - produced by the same company behind BBC smash Life On Mars - stars Tunji and fellow newcomers Aaron Johnson, Anna Brewster and Talulah Riley, with former EastEnder Jimi Mistry and Coupling's Gina Bellman.

Tunji is reluctantly moving south, leaving behind mum Mae, dad Shola, and sisters Alexa, 25, and Aisha, 23.

He added: "My plan is to stay in London for a few years and work up a name for myself before moving back to Scotland."

Nearly Famous is on E4 on Thursday at 11pm.

The main four players:

Owen (Aaron Johnson)

The handsome, guitar-playing lead. Tends to think with his fists first but has a strong sense of loyalty and will always stick up for the underdog.

Lila (Talulah Riley)

The kooky girl. Has lived a sheltered life with her mentally ill mother (Jekyll's Gina Bellman), but is eternally optimistic despite her personal difficulties.

Joe (Tunji Kasim)

The nerd. Imagine Moss from The I.T. Crowd in his college days. Very naive and lacking in street smarts, but incredibly polite and considerate.

Kate (Anna Brewster)

An aspiring actress with a famous father (a secret she wants to stay hidden). Wise to the ways of the world, appears confident and loves her drink.

So is Nearly Famous the next Skins? Unfortunately it suffers from that inevitable comparison from the outset and indeed, like for like, it comes up short. The cast is not as attractive, the antics aren't as debauched and the dialogue isn't as witty.

Judged on its own merits, however, Nearly Famous succeeds in being exactly what an E4 original should be: put simply, escapist TV...

It's the beginning of a new year at the Salinger School for the Performing Arts. Among the freshers are, Lila, a writer, Owen, a musician, Kate, an actor and Joe, a lighting and sound technician. Classes begin and all four attempt to fit in, unsuccessfully. Lila receives constant phone-calls from her ill mother, whilst finding it impossible to open up about her past in her writing class; Joe is excluded by the others for being a geek; Kate fails to hide her famous family name and becomes the college gossip as well as a shallow-friendship target; while Owen promises Matt the music teacher he'll be on his best behavior, but then faced with working alongside his nemesis, Cal, storms out on their class task.

Jimi Mistry and Gina Bellman are lined up to appear in an E4 drama about aspiring performers at a fictional drama school.

Made by Life on Mars producer Kudos Film and TV, Nearly Famous follows the lives of a group of students who have been awarded places at a top London school for performing arts and have just one chance to prove they have what it takes.

Mistry and Bellman will join a young cast featuring Talulah Riley, who plays Lila, a 19-year-old with a difficult mother, and Aaron Johnson, playing Owen, who is a gifted musician.

Johnson was last seen appearing alongside Max Beesley in ITV’s Talk To Me.

Others who will appear in the series include Anna Brewster as Kate, an aspiring actress who is tired of living in the shadow of her successful theatre producer dad.

Nearly Famous has been written by Holly Phillips.

NEARLY FAMOUS follows a group of performing arts students who’ve got talent, a taste for tequila and a whole load of angst that make the average teenager’s life seem easy.

There’s Lila (Talulah Riley – Pride and Prejudice, St Trinian’s), an awkward 19 year old with a mentally ill mother, but with an exceptional talent for writing; Owen (Aaron Johnson – The Illusionist), he can’t read music any more than he can re-write his wayward past, but since when did that stop him being the most gifted musician?

Joe, (Tunji Kasim) he looks like a geek, acts like a geek, so how did he drag himself up out of the hood? And Kate (Anna Brewster – Mrs Henderson Presents, The Tudors) a beautiful, ambitious actress, who’s sick of living in the shadow of her super-successful film director Dad. Over the six week series the world of this unlikely group of friends is explored.

Nearly Famous is written by Holly Phillips, furthering E4’s commitment to being a launch pad for new talent, both on and off screen.

E4 has commissioned a new six part drama series from Kudos Film and Television, continuing the channel’s investment in originated drama series, following the recent success of teen hit Skins.

Thw Cut follows the story of Lila who, despite being an awkward 19 year old with a psychotic mother, gets a place at The Cut - a top London school for performing arts. But The Cut isn’t full of typical stage school kids and Lila soon stumbles across the other school mis-fits. At last Lila’s found people like her, people with talent, a taste for tequila and a whole load of problems that make even her life seem ordinary, well almost. The Cut explores the world of a group of unlikely friends who have just one chance to prove they’ve got what it takes to make it.

Written by Holly Phillips, The Cut further highlights E4’s commitment to being a launch pad for new talent, both on and off screen. The series will begin filming in the summer, in London, with Jane Featherstone and Simon Crawford Collins as executive producers. The series will TX on E4 in the Autumn.

Kudos lines up 'Fame' teen drama for E4

kudos has made a new six-part drama for E4, set in a fictional performing arts school in London.

The Cut focuses on 19-year-old Lila, an awkward teenager with a difficult mother, who lands a place at the school.

Kudos' managing director Jane Featherstone and director of drama Simon Crawford Collins will executive produce the show, which will begin filming in the summer and air in the autumn.

Featherstone told Broadcast the series would be "sassy, fun and intelligent" and that its writer Holly Phillips, had created a "brilliant group of characters".

Watch out for new six part drama called The Cut coming to E4 in November!

The Cut is about a teen called Lila who gets a place at a top London performing arts school. Lila makes a group of friends who, like her, are gorgeous and talented but misfits.

Jimi Mistry (Dr. Fonseca in EastEnders) will play their music teacher.

The show is made by Kudos - the company behind hit shows The Amazing Mrs Pritchard, Spooks and Life on Mars.

Jimi Mistry joins cast of E4's new teen drama

East Is East star Jimi Mistry has joined the cast of new E4 drama The Cut.

The actor, who shot to fame in EastEnders as Dr. Fonseca, will play a music teacher in the six-part series, which follows the lives of four kids at a fictional London stage school.

The show - from Life On Mars producer Kudos - is being aimed at a younger teen audience than E4 megahit Skins. "It's completely different from Skins," a source told DS. "In The Cut the kids are in a highly competitive, dog-eat-dog environment where they'll do anything to succeed and get ahead of their peers. And they're all drop-dead gorgeous!"

The Cut airs on E4 from November.
