Nearly Famous

Skins was too shallow and vain, but E4’s new teen drama seems more likeable and purposeful. Whether it’s any good is not yet clear. Holly Phillips’s sweet-natured series follows a group of performing art students “chasing the dream” as they make their way at the Salinger School. The central gang of four vying for our attention are the weird but innocent Lila (Talulah Riley); wayward emo kid Owen (Aaron Johnson); ambitious but self-doubting Kate (Anna Brewster); and geeky, shy Joe (Tunji Kasim). Tricksy photography and bold lighting mask the flimsiness of the plot and some of the acting, but the characters have charm. SH
